Skana Adventures believes in fishing practices that promote awareness to the challenges of the recreational fishery. We typically like to fish inshore and keep our take to a minimum. This just makes good sense, and if we can save fish for future generations then we would like to contribute as best we can. This means using gear that is appropriate for the fish species and returning larger fish that are likely to be spawners while retaining smaller males thus contributing to the fecundity of breeding fish. We have all been guilty of wanting that big trophy fish, and being determined to fill the freezer. We endeavour to offer a choice and take from the oceans what our clients feel comfortable with.

Halibut:

A significant predator, the halibut is at home in the Pacific Northwest plying the depths between 180’ and 500’. These transient monsters can reach upwards of 500 Lbs, but smaller fish are much better eating, only reaching sexual maturity at about 30 inches or 76 cm. It is best to leave the big fish alone, keeping fish between 20lbs and 30lbs is ideal. Anything over 70 – 80 lbs is likely a breeder. April and May are great months for inshore fishing.

Salmon:

Are available throughout the year but are commonly fished during the summer months as the fish load up on baitfish and migrate towards their birth streams. The acrobatic Coho and mighty Chinook are the species most commonly sought.

Other retained species:

Skana Adventures believes in the full experience with a minimum footprint so we also harvest species that are less sought after are more numerous and have less selective fishing pressure. Black Rockfish, Greenling, and Yellow Eye. While Spot Prawns, Blue Musssels and Dungeness Crab round out the menu nicely.
